Now at 32, Bernadette has fulfilled her promises. She has three children aged 15, seven and four and wrote a book called 'Brave Little Bear' championing motherhood. Bernadette is a regular speaker at schools and community events throughout Australia providing advice and support on teenage pregnancy. 'She works tirelessly to show single mums how life's adversities can be turned into positives,' says her son Damien. 'But she also always has time for her own kids and makes us all feel very special - and she makes great choc chip cookies!' *

Bernadette's nominator and son , Damien Oliver-Black, said in the nomination:

When mum faced unexpected pregnancy at 16, she promised herself three things. To be a good mother, finish her education and to write the book, that she needed and couldn't find, to help and encourage others in this situation. I am now 15, my sister is seven and brother is four. Mum's book is called 'Brave Little Bear'. This is the meaning of her name. It champions motherhood and shows that with support and encouragement anything is possible. She also has a website that helps many women. Mum speaks in communities and around Australia to many mothers both young and old. She is also a nurse. I love my mum because she helps so many others, but most of all I love her because she is mine and makes us feel like the most special kids and she makes me great choc chip cookies.

Bernadette's Top Tip: "Support and encouragement will get you through anything!"
